Hands Down… Relevant, Quality Content is the King.
Here are some specifics and the top 3 reasons why:
1. All other parts of successful SEO rely on your content.
You can have great site structure, tagging, site map generator, load time, etc. (I’ll cover back linking below). But, none of these parts do any good if your site content is not relevant & of good quality. I’ve personally seen web pages and sites climb substantially (to front page listings) in specific keyword placement just by having quality content.
Not just any content… but relevant, quality content. What do I mean ?
Your content must be relevant to exactly what the searcher typed in the search box. This is Google and all the search engines goal. To provide the most relevant, up to date & best results for searchers. If your content is not researched and optimized for specific keywords being searched, the search engines will not bring your site or page up under those terms. The reader needs to also realize an immediate relevancy to the term searched when landing on your page. Google also wants the most recent, relevant content. This is why strategically planning frequent content updates & blog posts on specific keyword targeted topics is crucial.
Content that is original, valuable & shareable. Very important. Is your content original & interesting? Does it give value to the reader? Is it something people will want to share? Make sure it is all 3 of these… Many SEO companies use “content farms” to create content for their clients. Basically what you get for content is boring chatter with keywords placed within. This practice is frowned upon by the search engines. I also frown upon that practice and will not allow it in our SEO services.
2. When your content is good, back links come more easily & naturally. Your site is ranked higher…
Google places weight in their search engine algorithms on how many other sites are linked to your website (not how many you are linked to). The more relevant inbound links you have, the more important Google views your site and thus, increasing your site position. People like to link to sites that offer value to their own readership. If your content is original, relevant, valuable & shareable… you will get backlinks much easier and further increase your site position.
3. Googles new “Panda” is looking for low quality content.
Google implemented their new Panda Technology tm algorithm system earlier this year. Among many other things, it specifically looks for low quality content. They are also watching visitor interaction with websites (bad content, visitor leaves quickly, Google knows).
According to the Google Blog post that Amit Singhal and Matt Cutts published on February 24:
“This update is designed to reduce rankings for low-quality sites—sites which are low-value add for users, copy content from other websites or sites that are just not very useful. At the same time, it will provide better rankings for high-quality sites—sites with original content and information such as research, in-depth reports, thoughtful analysis and so on.”
When they find low quality content (and they will), Google will penalize your site by dropping it from placement.
There is a lot that needs to go into creating quality content… and a winning SEO campaign.
